What is Fartlek Run?
As a certified running coach and a runner, I know the benefits of Fartlek training, a versatile and effective method to enhance running performance. And hopefully, in this post, you will get an idea about it.
What is Fartlek?
Fartlek, a Swedish term meaning "speed play," is a training technique that simply blends continuous running with interval training. It involves varying your pace throughout your run, mixing faster segments with slower recovery periods. This approach helps improve both aerobic and anaerobic systems, making it a comprehensive workout for runners of all levels.
Why is Fartlek Important?
Fartlek training is crucial because it simulates the unpredictable pace changes in races, enhances mental toughness, and breaks the monotony of structured workouts. It's a flexible method that can be tailored to individual needs and goals, making it an essential tool in a runner's arsenal.
How Does Fartlek Help?
The varied intensity of Fartlek training improves speed, endurance, and recovery. By pushing your body to adapt to different speeds, you'll develop a more efficient running form and increase your lactate threshold, allowing you to sustain a faster pace for longer periods.
Incorporate Fartlek into Your Training
To integrate Fartlek into your training, start with one session per week. Gradually increase the number and length of the fast intervals as your fitness improves. Remember to listen to your body and adjust the intensity based on how you feel on any given day.
Example Fartlek Session
Here's an example of a Fartlek session for a 5K runner:
- Warm-up: 10 minutes easy jogging + Drills
- Main set: 1 minute hard, 2 minutes easy (repeat 10 times) ★ Remember you need to run at your easy pace.
- Cool down 10 minutes of easy jogging
This session can be modified for longer distances by increasing the duration of the hard efforts and the total number of repetitions.
Fartlek training is a dynamic and enjoyable way to boost your running performance. Give it a try, and you'll soon see the benefits in your speed, endurance, and overall fitness.
Happy running! 🏃♂💨
NB: Remember, whenever you start a new training that needs some extra strength & speed, you need to consult with an expert person to know if you are ready for that training or not, otherwise it can be injurious.
Or at least listen to your body when you are doing this kind of threshold training.
